Nominations are invited for Ninth Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Leadership in Agriculture.
The Trust for Advancement of Agricultural Sciences (TAAS) has instituted an Award in honour of leading Indian Agricultural Scientist, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan. This prestigious Award is named as “Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Leadership in Agriculture” and is given annually to a scientist for his/her outstanding contributions in agriculture as demonstrated by the impact of his work on overall agricultural growth. The First Award was given to Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, Nobel Laureate by Hon’ble Ex-President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam during March, 2005. The Second Award was presented to another distinguished scientist and World Food Laureate, Dr. G.S. Khush, by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, during the International Rice Congress held in New Delhi on 9th October, 2006. The other recipients of the Award are - Dr. S.K. Vasal, a leading scientist in the field of Quality Protein Maize (QPM) and also World Food Prize laureate; Dr. Rattan Lal, Professor of Soil Science and Director of the Carbon Management and Sequestration Center at The Ohio State University. On the 18th December, 2010, this Award was conferred on Dr. Sanjay Rajaram, an Eminent Wheat Breeder and presented by Hon’ble Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India. On January 25, 2012, this award was conferred on Dr. M.C. Saxena, Former Assistant Director General, ICARDA, Syria by Former H.E. Dr. Balram Jakhar. On the 24th June, 2013, this award was conferred on Dr. William D. Dar, Director General, International Crop Research Institute for Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) for outstanding contributions made towards food security and agricultural Sustainability in dry areas of Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa and presented by Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Member, Planning Commission. Recently, on the 28th September, 2015, this award was conferred on Dr. Thomas Lumpkin, Former Director General, CIMMYT, Mexico by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan himself for his significant contribution in the field of agricultural research, education, development and administration with particular focus on technology development, refinement and adoption of conservation agriculture in cereal and vegetable production systems of South Asia, ethno botany and marketing systems.
TAAS takes this opportunity to seek nominations of suitable candidates for this Award, so as to reach the Secretariat on or before 30th April, 2016. The proposals already received last year be automatically considered.
